The NUC's Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS), adopted in 2022, is the most significant change to Nigerian higher education in over a decade. Here's what it means in practical terms.
From BMAS to CCMAS
CCMAS replaces the earlier BMAS (Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards). Where BMAS specified what students should learn, CCMAS sets a clearer floor on core content per programme, while leaving 30% of credit hours flexible, so universities can specialise, innovate, or respond to local industry needs.
The 70/30 split
- 70% core: Standardised across all Nigerian universities. CNS focuses here, these are the courses every student must master.
- 30% elective / institutional: Each university adds its own flavour, research strengths, industry partnerships, regional context.
